“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.”
John burrows

In a time of climate emergency, the importance of being in and with nature is more critical than ever. Learning how to listen, observe and respond to our environment is a gift that is often taken for granted. Studies have also shown the positive impacts of being in nature. Just 20 minutes can lower cortisol levels and blood pressure rates– but the deeper question is– is it quality time? How are we engaging with, and in, nature? What is our responsibility to the land, and the more-than-human world? How do we engage with nature while also applying the principles of leaving no trace?
Over the past 5 years, I’ve had the pleasure of being commissioned by a number of organizations including the Varley Art Gallery, Doris McCarthy Gallery, Jumblies Theatre, Markham Public Library and Scarborough Arts to lead outdoor nature poetry walks in community.
I’m also a Certified Forest Bathing Guide and Nature Connection Specialist (Forest Therapy Hub), and am qualified to lead Forest Bathing Walks for participants with varying needs and abilities.

Nature-Based Arts Workshops can incorporate nature journaling, seated observations, flora and fauna identification, land art creation (using found materials) poetry writing and sensory explorations. Walks are tailored to accessibility and community needs, themes and ideas organizations are exploring, and the unique environments around them.
Forest Bathing Walks are designed for participants to reconnect with nature through a carefully designed sequence of sensory nature connection activities, with a particular emphasis on enhancing well- being. Forest Bathing differs than a walk in the woods or a nature poetry walk because it focuses on heightening the therapeutic benefits of being in nature. Walks are tailored to accessibility and community needs.

Testimonials
The Doris McCarthy Gallery has collaborated with Sheniz Janmohamed to offer a series of Nature Poetry Walks over the last two years. Responding to our exhibitions, Sheniz has developed a beautiful programming series that expands on and provides new access points for the exhibition themes, encourages participants to deeply consider their relationship to the land in a generative and creative way, and builds a sense of community. We really are so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with you on this, so many times!
– Erin Peck, Exhibitions and Programming Coordinator, Doris McCarthy Gallery
Through thoughtful guidance, Sheniz has created a welcoming and inspiring environment where seniors feel empowered to express themselves creatively while fostering a sense of community and well-being. Sheniz’s workshops are a perfect balance of engaging indoor and outdoor activities and mindful practices, encouraging participants to explore their artistic potential while nurturing their connection to the natural world.
The transformational impact of Sheniz’s work is evident in the beautiful, ephemeral art pieces created by the participants, and in the joy, confidence, and vitality she inspires. Her ability to tailor each session to meet the mobility and accessibility needs and interests of the group ensures that everyone, regardless of their skill level, and ability, feels valued and included.
Scarborough Arts and the Healthy Arts for Seniors program are truly fortunate to benefit from Sheniz’s passion, creativity, and dedication.
